Khamsa medium 03

This khamsa (medium size) was hand made in clay and was hand painted in Fes Morocco.

The khamsa is ‘popular throughout the Middle East and North Africa and commonly used in jewellery and wall hangings. Depicting the open right hand, an image recognised and used as a sign of protection in many times throughout history, the hamsa is believed to provide defense against the evil eye.’ (Reference Wikipedia)

Khamsa is also the word in Arabic for the number ‘five’ and also for the five fingers of the hand. The khamsa is used to protect against the evil eye, a malicious stare believed to be able to cause illness , death or general unluckiness. The khamsa is said to protect you from these curses. Raising your right hand with the palm showing and the fingers slightly apart is meant to blind the agressor. Hang a khamsa in your home, and you will protect yourself and your family from such curses.

For further information on the origins of the khamsa, take a look at Wikipedia.

This khamsa is painted in blue and white, so typical of the ceramics of Fes.

It measures 14cm in length and 11cm in width. It has a small hole in the top so you can hang it on the wall.
